Twitter promotion

As the holidays approach, we'll be watching how companies use social media to promote specials. Here's one we spotted this week from @shabbyapple: For an extra 20% off sale, enter code TWITTER at checkout. the code unlocks after 25 Retweets! GO!

We like the requirement for a certain number of pass-alongs before the code is activated. While we've seen many promotions that are limited to a certain number (which removes the incentive to share), this encourages fans to share the promotion.

Facebook out in the cold

Literally in the cold that is. For the first time, Facebook is locating a server farm outside the US, just south the Arctic Circle. The location in Sweden will allow them to use just air for cooling. I’m still not sure if this is a good idea by not requiring additional use of electricity or will just be heating up the air in the Arctic Circle.

Afica is the largest growing mobile market

Africa's mobile market is now second only to Asia and has been growing by 20% for the last 5 years according to the Wall Street Journal. Mobile is the only option for many in Africa and their mobile device is also used for banking as well as communication. Despite this growth, up to 36% of people in the largest markets do not have access to mobile services, so there is still enormous potential.

Charging for Google Maps

Starting in January, Google may start charging business site who use the Google Maps API for more than 25,000 calls per day according to the BBC.
