Our friends from the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) traveled to our neck of the woods last week to host its annual Josephine L. Taylor Leadership Institute. AFB held this year's conference in DC to engage with the new leaders on Capitol Hill and to explore ways to improve opportunities for people with vision loss.

A highlight of the conference was the Access Awards Ceremony. At this Capitol Hill event, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin and Congressman Edward Markey from Massachussetts each received AFB's Migel Medal--the highest honor in the blindness field. These two legislators were recognized for their decades of work on behalf of people with disabilities. Sen. Harkin was the lead sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, while Rep. Markey has shown leadership on the critical issue of telecommunications accessibility.

Both of the honorees addressed the ceremony attendees, vowing to continue their support for people with disabilities. Congratulations, Sen. Harkin and Rep. Markey!
